Ravichandran Ashwin’s Top 3 Test Bowling Performances at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s seasoned off-spinner, has had his share of highs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. As he prepares for the upcoming Test against New Zealand, let’s revisit his top three bowling performances at this iconic venue.

    #3 (5-156 & 4-34) vs West Indies – November 2011

Ashwin’s impressive debut series against West Indies in 2011 set the tone for his career. In the third Test at Wankhede, he claimed a total of nine wickets, earning the Player of the Match award.

In the first innings, Ashwin bowled tirelessly for 52.1 overs, taking 5-156. Despite the West Indies posting a mammoth 590 runs, he picked crucial wickets, including both openers, and finished with a five-for. In the second innings, he showcased his prowess again, taking 4-34 as the Windies collapsed for 134. His all-around performance included a vital 103 runs with the bat, helping India fight back in a thrilling draw.

    #2 (4-8 & 4-34) vs New Zealand – December 2021

In December 2021, Ashwin was instrumental in India’s commanding 372-run victory over New Zealand. Batting first, India scored 352 runs, with Ashwin’s bowling stealing the show.

He dismantled the Kiwis in their first innings, taking 4-8 in just eight overs, which included key dismissals such as Henry Nicholls and Tim Southee. In the second innings, Ashwin was again on fire, capturing another four wickets (4-34) as New Zealand was bowled out for 167, solidifying India’s dominant performance.

    #1 (6-112 & 6-55) vs England – December 2016

Ashwin’s finest performance at Wankhede came against England in December 2016. In the fourth Test of the series, he claimed a remarkable 12 wickets, leading India to an innings victory.

In the first innings, he took 6-112, dismantling England’s batting order and crucially dismissing Joe Root and Moeen Ali. Following India’s mammoth response of 631, Ashwin wreaked havoc in the second innings, taking 6-55. His ability to claim the last six wickets showcased his dominance, as England fell for just 195, sealing a comprehensive win for India.

These performances highlight Ashwin’s exceptional skill and crucial role in India’s success at Wankhede Stadium, and as he gears up for the next match, fans will be hoping for another stellar display from the veteran spinner.
